CHICAGO (CBS) — Severe thurnderstorm warnings popped up all afternoon as Chicagoland dealt with rain, wind, and hail through the evening.
The storms uprooted trees and left sporting fields flooded in the southwest suburbs near Channahon.
Parts of the city were also hit hard. In Albany Park, a car was crushed and buried by a huge tree limb that came down during the heavy downpour.
By just before 9 p.m., downpours were still around, but the severe storm threat was over. But the storms prompted severe thunderstorm warning after severe thunderstorm warning earlier in the afternoon and evening.
A warning was in effect for northeastern Lake and central Porter counties in the mid-afternoon. A severe thunderstorm warning was also issued for northeastern Cook and DuPage counties until 6:30 p.m.
A flood advisory has also been issued for western Will County and all of Grundy County, as well as northwestern Livingston and southern LaSalle counties.
The advisory is in effect until 9:45 p.m. It stems from a concern that slow-moving thunderstorms over the areas could dump 1 to 2 inches of rain in an hour.
An urban and small stream flood advisory was also issued for southeast Cook County, and for northern Lake County, Indiana until 10:45 p.m.
For some areas farther south and west toward Peoria, a flash flood warning was issued. A flash flood warning has also been issued well to the south in Ford and Iroquois counties.
Wind gusts of 60 mph were also a concern for the area.
A severe thunderstorm watch was also in effect for Cook, Will, Kendall, Grundy, and Kankakee counties and some downstate counties. It was canceled by about 8 p.m. for the Illinois counties, but a watch remained in effect until 9 p.m. for Lake, Porter, Jasper, Newton, and Benton counties in Indiana.
Once the front passes, showers will weaken through the night. The low for Monday night is 64.
Look for cooler conditions Tuesday with highs in the 70s. A few afternoon showers are possible.
It will be heating up day by day.
On Wednesday afternoon, showers and possible thunderstorms are on tap again with a high of 78.
